Perineal care, often referred to as peri-care, is one of the
most important things men and women can do for themselves.

People who experience urinary and/or fecal (bowel) incontinence are at great risk for skin breakdown. Additionally, certain people are even more susceptible to skin breakdown, including those who are confined to a wheelchair or bed. Peri-care keeps you feeling clean but also helps prevent infection, rashes and ulceration. Good hygiene and peri-care can also prevent a person from feeling embarrassed because of strong body odor.

The use of diapers and other containment devices may prevent the bedding and clothing from getting soiled. However, they also keep the urine and/or stool in constant contact with the skin. It doesn't take much time for the skin to break down because of this. Special skin care must be done to prevent this from happening.

Maintenance of healthy, intact perineal skin is a constant challenge to the incontinence person and/or the caregiver. The National Association for Continence reports that 53% of the homebound elders in the United Stated are incontinent and that urinary incontinence is one of the 10 leading conditions among homebound people. They report that more than half of all residents in nursing homes are incontinent and it is the second leading cause of institutionalization.
